Operation Wallacea - Who are we?

Biodiversity and Climate Research

  • Operation Wallacea is a biodiversity and climate research organisation. For 25 years it has run biodiversity field expeditions to support the research of hundreds of academics and funded from tuition fees paid by students that then gain experience of working with publishing scientists. Nearly 600 papers in peer reviewed journals have been published from these research programmes.

During the travel restrictions of the pandemic, the Opwall research teams concentrated much more on supporting corporates in achieving their carbon and biodiversity targets, using the network of academics and reliable in-country partners that had been built up over 25 years on the biodiversity research expeditions. In addition, we started working with various rewilding projects in the UK and overseas and developed local field courses and virtual training courses to train students in the skills needed to work in the biodiversity and climate fields.

Opwall is at centre of a small network of organisations. The conservation projects are often run through the Wallacea Trust (a UK registered charity: 1078362), whilst Wildlife Experience tours at the Opwall research sites and outside the main Opwall research season are run by a sister organisation – Friends of Wallacea .
