At the beginning of the summer holidays a groups of 12 brave students started a journey full of adventures, challenges and joy under the guidance of Operation Wallacea. Our two-week school trip to Croatia was an unforgettable time, blending education with hands-on experience.

In the first week, we explored the stunning Krka National Park. Our days were filled with lectures on bird, mammal and butterfly surveys. We explored caves and went on night walks to investigate nocturnal animals, such as scorpions, spiders, snakes and more. Having professionals from various fields on both sites was especially beneficial for students aspiring to enter these careers, because we had the opportunity to engage in valuable conversations and gain insights into these industries. We even got the chance to help a PhD student by collecting data for her dissertation. The first week was both challenging and rewarding, as we navigated through dense forests and hot temperatures, but were rewarded with knowledge and the sunning views of Krka’s waterfalls.

The second week took us to the lovely Silba Island, a paradise for marine enthusiasts. Here, we swapped our hiking boots for wetsuits and dived into the water. While some students were able to successfully complete their diving license with the PADI organisation, others completed surveys underwater, measuring the populations and/or density of sea cucumbers, sea urchins, starfish and various fish species, gaining insights into marine conservation. During the second week we grew a deeper appreciation and understanding of the delicate balance of marine ecosystems.

This trip was more than just an educational excursion; it was a journey of discovery and teamwork. We returned with a wealth of knowledge, unforgettable memories, a renewed passion for environmental conservation. Additionally we express our gratitude to Mr Söldner for organizing this entire trip, and Ms Mateo and Mr Cazorla for their guidance throughout. Without their efforts and passion, this journey would not have been possible.
