Motivated by my geography studies at university I was keen to go on an Opwall expedition. Croatia specifically appealed to me after researching the amazing site at Krka National Park. Despite my extensive research into this expedition I was still hesitant on what to expect but upon my arrival I instantly knew I had made the right decision. Throughout my weeks here I’ve challenged myself physically and mentally and achieved far more than I had expected.

Each day was varied, typically consisting of at least two surveys as well as lectures and workshops. One of my favourite surveys was bird mist netting which was unlike anything I had done before. It involved setting up multiple nets at different locations which were used to catch birds. This enabled us to record the morphometrics of different bird species. Being able to handle the birds and assist with the data collection was a very rewarding opportunity which really appealed to me. I also really enjoyed partaking in habitat surveys as I was able to expand on my previous geographical field knowledge in a different environment. These surveys were conducted at several sites along transects and consisted of vegetation surveying which was used to gather knowledge on habitats present within the region.

Working alongside specialists and experts across all surveys was extremely insightful and I have built significant relationships with members of staff who specialise in numerous areas of conservation. The team at Krka, Croatia are beyond friendly and welcoming and the lasting friendships I have made during my time here has made this experience so special.
