With access to over 18.500 ha of low-veld habitat, Dinokeng Game Reserve is our largest research site in South Africa. It is situated just 40km north of the financial capital of the country – Pretoria. Dinokeng offers a novel model for South African conservation as it was developed around existing homesteads and properties in the area. Parts of the reserve, therefore, see elephants wandering in between private properties, while large open swathes of land are available for them in other areas. In 2017, Opwall teams were able to successfully confirm the presence of leopard in the reserve, meaning Dinokeng now fully lives up to its “Big 5” reputation.
