Malawi is a small country with a population of around 16 million. The national language is Chichewa although English is also an official language and is widely spoken. The country's topography is defined by highlands split by the Great Rift Valley, and of course Lake Malawi, which constitutes a fifth of the country's area. Malawi has a largely agricultural economy with over 90% of the population living in rural areas. There is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in Malawi and the country is not on the global stage as a holiday destination despite some stunning scenery. The capital is Lilongwe and the currency is the Kwacha.
