The module comprises four assessment methods, all of which will be finished and submitted by the end of the expedition.  You can download the course overview that includes the assessment structure, and Suggested Research Proposal Areas as well as suggested reading lists next to the relevant country at the bottom of the page.

1. Knowledge assessment in class tests - 15 marks

1 hour of short answer exams run at the end of the Required Training Week and based on the knowledge gained during this week. This will include question on species identification, general ecology and research methods in the specific environment.

2. Student Assessment Form from field academics - 10 marks

An assessment of the student's application and work rate during an Additional Training Course and Research Projects. This is recorded on the Student Assessment Form. One of these forms will be required from each of the academics that the student works with during an Additional Training Course or Research Project. Therefore each student will have a number of such forms by the end of their expedition and the average grade of these will be submitted towards the final module assessment.

3. Field work Journal - 15 marks

All students will be required to keep a Fieldwork Journal in a robust note pad. Students should complete this on a daily basis, and text should be strictly scientific. The journal should detail the knowledge gained in terms of research methods, conservation issues learned, techniques used, and species seen. This will be signed on site and returned to Imperial after the assessment.

4. Research Proposal - 50 marks

The student will submit a 2000 word Research Proposal based on one of the titles listed below. The Proposal will require prior reading before going out on site but the student is then expected to incorporate first hand field experience into the final essay which needs to be completed before leaving the field.
