Honduran Coastal Communities

The Cayos Cochinos Marine Protected Area was established in 2000.  The management plan for the MPA restricts fishing activities for coastal communities such as Nueva Armenia, which traditionally used to fish in these areas.  In order to help develop alternative income streams for the local communities Operation Wallacea is using Nueva Armenia as the gateway to the MPA and volunteers will be staying overnight in the village.

School groups who joined Operation Wallacea in previous years have visited local Garifuna communities along the coast and have been keen to develop links with local schools.  The Operation Wallacea Trust along with the Honduran Coral Reef Foundation who manage the MPA formed a new fund to help channel the funds received to provide effective improvements in local educational opportunities and in environmental improvements.  A scholarship scheme has been launched along with a series of initiatives in these coastal communities to help develop alternative income streams.
