Fundraising

When faced with the opportunity of a lifetime, there tends to be only one major factor that holds people back…. expense!! Fundraising is a key part of any expedition and although it appears to be the most difficult challenge you face, it has been achieved by countless other volunteers. With proper planning, a good imagination and lots of friendly determination, your fundraising will be successful and lots of fun! Remember, you are fundraising to join projects that are successfully conserving important habitats and species as well as increasing income for local communities.

When you join one of the Operation Wallacea projects, the fundraising group will be set up. The fundraising team provide ongoing support to each group, helping them plan fundraising events and work out their individual fundraising target.

In 2007, 85% of volunteers met their fundraising targets and with the addition of a full time fundraiser later that year, this increased for 2008. Professional fundraising help is given to both university and school groups.

There are many ways to raise the funds needed and they fall in to 4 main categories:
  • Organising fundraising activities: These events include bag packing, cake stalls, collections, sponsored events, car boot sales, swap shops, fun days, themed parties etc

  • Raffles: Operation Wallacea have created the Opwall Grand Prize Draw. Volunteers buy books of tickets from the fundraising team for £3 a book and sell them on for £10 a book making a huge £7 profit for each book sold.1st prize is a brand new car, 2nd prize is 2 around the world tickets and 3rd prize is a 6 week Opwall expedition.

  • Grants and sponsorship: Applying to local companies, trusts, schools and universities for funding. Groups such as the Round Table, Lions International, Rotary Club, and parish councils are usually only too happy to help. Offering publicity or a talk at a local school on there behalf, is a good incentive.

  • Working for it: Part time jobs, holiday jobs and Christmas jobs - even a few hours a week will bump up that expedition fund and make those targets even more achievable.

Volunteers usually do a combination of all four and set a separate target for each. The fundraising group will work best if you have regular meetings and each member has an assigned role. This ensures the smooth running of your group and will certainly help when organising large events such as corporate dinner parties and fashion shows.
