Dates and prices for
School Expeditions
Costs
The
cost of all the expeditions payable to Opwall is £995 (UK),
US$1,650 (US), Can$1,700 (Canada), Aus$1650 (Australia) or ZAR10,725
(South Africa) and this covers all the food, accommodation,
transport around the sites from the start and finish points of the
expedition, training (except canopy access in Honduras and Indonesia
which is an optional extra), participation in the various projects,
medical cover and medical and evacuation insurance cover. The
travel costs to and from the start and finish point of the
expeditions are not covered. STA Travel (UK, US, Australia and South
Africa) or Victor Travel (Canada) will organise all your travel
arrangements. Each research site will involve very different costs
over and above the fee payable to Opwall depending on the travel
costs. The only costs not covered by the Opwall and the travel
agency payment are any insurance cover needed beyond medical and
evacuation cover, costs of additional elective training (e.g. canopy
access course, dive training beyond PADI Open Water), dive equipment
rental, PIC cards and PADI training books, local taxes and Park
entry fees. The detailed guidance notes on the Opwall website for
each country quantify any additional costs but these are not
substantial in any of the countries. Summing these three figures
(Opwall payment, travel agency payment and additional costs at the
site from the website description) will give you the total cost of
the expedition but it is always a good idea to add a contingency
sum, which can be repaid to the group at the end of the expedition
if not used.
Indonesia
If you are going
to the south Buton forests, the start point of the expeditions is
Bau Bau on Buton Island in SE Sulawesi on
Thursday at 1300hrs
and the end point of the expedition is Wanci
Island in the Wakatobi Marine National Park on Wednesday at 1700hrs.
If you are going to the north Buton forests, the start point of the
expeditions is Ereke on Buton Island on
Thursday at 1300hrs but the finish
point is also at Ereke on Wednesday at 1200hrs.

South Africa and
Mozambique
The
expeditions start on a Saturday at 0800hrs at either the
Insikazi Camp in the Mdluli Concession (Numbi Gate, Kruger) or
at the Manyeleti Concession, Kruger and finish on a Friday
at 0800hrs at either Sodwana Bay (if diving there) or
Kosi Bay if diving in Mozambique. Note from 2013 there is also
the opportunity to start at Maputo Special Reserve in Mozambique and
finish at this site after diving in Malongane.

Madagascar
The Mahamavo expeditions start on the
Saturday at 1600hrs at Mariarano village
and finish on the
Friday at 1000hrs at Nosy Be airport.
Schools going on this expedition need to book flights to Mahajanga
via Nosy Be (not Antananarivo) – otherwise there is an exhausting 11
hour overland trip midway through the expedition.
The
Mandrare Valley expedition starts on
Saturday at 1600hrs
at Ifotaka village
and finishes on
Friday at 0800hrs at Antananarivo airport.

This is an expedition where the flights can be purchased online from
a budget airline (Easyjet –
www.easyjet.com) to Sharm el Sheikh and
then you need to contact the Nature and Science Foundation for Egypt
(opwall@nsfegypt.org)
to organise your transfers to and from the start and finish of the
expeditions. Alternatively, you can use STA Travel or Victor Travel
(Canadians only) to organise the whole travel package.
