Who's who at Operation Wallacea USA

Director: Sara Carlson

Sara first became involved with Operation Wallacea as a volunteer in the summer of 2009 after graduating from Lehigh University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She spent 8 weeks in South Africa and Mozambique where she performed bird counts and habitat surveys in Kruger National Park and fell in love with diving after swimming with hammerheads. Sara started working as a fundraising advisor traveling to various universities across the East Coast, and now runs a team dedicated to increasing the American presence in the field. She spent the last two summers lecturing and coordinating the school program at the marine site in Indonesia and looks forward to experiencing more of the Opwall research sites.

Fundraising advisor: Matt Horder

Matt's introduction to Operation Wallacea came when he spent the summer of 2009 as a research assistant in South Africa and Mozambique, performing bird and habitat surveys for four weeks followed by four weeks on the marine site working on stereo video monitoring projects. After graduating from Tufts University in 2010 with a degree in economics and environmental studies, Matt jumped at the chance to work for Operation Wallacea. Since joining Opwall, Matt has worked as a Fundraising Advisor in the US and as a Schools Coordinator on Hoga, our Indonesian marine research island. Although Matt grew up in the UK, he has now lived in the US for 9 years, making Operation Wallacea USA the perfect place for him to combine his experience with both cultures (and languages!).

Science and Education advisor: Lyndsay Rankin

Lyndsay graduated from Michigan State University in 2007 with a degree in Environmental Biology/Zoology. She has spent the last four years conducting wildlife and ecology field research across the United States and Africa. She has carried out population surveys of lemurs across southern Madagascar for six months as well as monitored the activity and ecology of chimpanzee and gorilla communities in the rainforests of Gabon for a year. She will be using her international and ecology research experience as a Research Advisor for the US Opwall office in 2011/2012.

Research Advisor: Katie Smith
Katie recently graduated from Union College in 2011 with a B.S in Biology and Classics. She has always had a passion for wildlife and the environment, so working for Operation Wallacea is a great match. Over the past 10 years, Katie has volunteered with the CT Audubon Society, Maritime Aquarium, and ANIMA rehabilitation. She has had the opportunity to take care of various types of wildlife, including birds of prey, reptiles, amphibians, meerkats, and even penguins! While on a term abroad in Greece, she interned at the Hellenic Ornithological Society (creating a campaign plan against illegal hunting of birds in the Maltese Islands). All of these experiences have strengthened her interest in conservation. Katie is excited to be a part of the Opwall team, and is looking forward to many new adventures.
